The Bald Soprano

“Theatre is not literature…it is simply what cannot be expressed by any other means.” – Eugene Ionesco

Quimera Theatre Collective, in partnership with the Granville Island Cultural Society, are pleased as punch to bring you The Bald Soprano, the classic absurdist play by French-Romanian playwright Eugene Ionesco. Written during his frustrating struggle to learn English, Ionesco takes the audience down a rabbit hole into the catacombs of language where nothing is sacred: family, friends, servants, sopranos, even words themselves.

“The play has not aged. One might even suggest that we have caught up with it."- Mel Gussow, The New York Times

Following up their most recent theatrical endeavour Tales in Crux: A Festival of Short Plays at CBC Studios, Quimera is excited to bring together new and familiar faces for a journey through the world of the laughably inane. It is a dangerous world drifting along the edges of reality, with the English Smiths and the English Martins trying to have a nice English dinner party while pointless doorbells, surprise visitors and their own English banality drag them towards the thing they fear most - Death. But what about the bald soprano?

An ensemble cast features Asher Isbrucker & May Joy Bosaing as the very English Mr & Mrs Smith, Nick Rinke & Caitlin Docking as the very English Mr & Mrs Martin, Luke Johnson as the storytelling Fire Chief, and Natasha Zacher as the deductive Maid. The production also boasts the design talents of Keenan Johnston (Sound Design), Scott Zechner (Light Design), Tracy Varju (Costume Design), & Lachlan Jones (Set Design), with direction by Matthew Willis. Stage management by Becky Fitzpatrick, assisted by Hillary Smith.
